Liz Marr works across graphite, oil, and charcoal, with graphite as the core of her practice. Drawing on art-historical references and the absurd humor of Early Medieval manuscript marginalia, her work examines ostensibly trivial yet enduring aspects of the human condition- sexuality, violence, desire, and dread- through an unromantic, ironic lens. Her pieces often begin as precise graphite studies before evolving into oil paintings or large-scale charcoal works. Fascinated by liminal states and moments of psychological tension, Marr distills complex emotions into concise, snapshot-like compositions: visual haikus that balance clarity with the possibility of deeper contemplation.
